Thermal drones carry a heat camera that sees differences in surface temperature, which makes hot solar cells, failing electrical joints, wet roof patches, lost livestock and people in the veld stand out. Compact enterprise models pair the thermal camera with a zoom or wide camera on one gimbal. They cost far more than a camera drone, so it pays to know which sensor you need and who will interpret the images. Send one request and drone suppliers and resellers that serve your area quote you directly. It is free and you are under no obligation.
Choosing a thermal camera
- Radiometric or not: a radiometric camera records a temperature value for each pixel, which you need for solar, electrical and roof reports. Non-radiometric cameras only show hot and cold for search and security.
- Resolution: 640 by 512 thermal sensors show far more detail at a safe distance than 256 or 320 wide sensors.
- Zoom and visual camera: a zoom camera beside the thermal one lets you read the fault from further away.
- Flight time and weather: check flight time with the payload, and whether the drone is rated for dust and light rain.
Who reads the images
A thermal camera reads surface temperature, not what lies behind it. Sun load, reflections off glass and metal, wind and emissivity all change the reading. A trained thermographer interprets the images and writes the findings. Good practice is to fly solar arrays in strong, steady sun and electrical gear while it is under load, and to log weather and time with every image. If you only need occasional reports, hiring an operator for drone inspections may cost less than buying a drone, training a pilot and learning the analysis.
Night flying and the rules
Many buyers search for drones with night vision, but SACAA guidance for private flying says fly in daylight. Night flights and any paid work, such as solar inspections or anti-poaching patrols, need a Remote Pilot Licence, an operator certificate and the right approvals in the operations manual. Ask suppliers and operators to show the RPL and ROC. Flying near power lines, substations and solar farms also needs the site owner's permission and safety rules, and national parks stay off limits. See drone security patrols if you want a service rather than a drone.
Price and comparing quotes
A compact thermal drone costs about R89,700 to R125,800 including VAT, going by a 2026 price guide. Ask each supplier for the thermal resolution, whether it is radiometric, the zoom range, the number of batteries and the charging case. Check the warranty, local repair and calibration support, software for reports, and whether training is included. A quote that leaves out spare batteries can look cheaper than it is. Ask how long a repair or recalibration takes and whether a loan drone is offered meanwhile, because a thermal drone that sits in a workshop for weeks costs you inspection days.
What to include in your request
- What you will inspect or search for
- Whether you need radiometric temperature readings
- The thermal resolution and zoom you want
- How many batteries and whether training is needed
- Whether you already hold an RPL and ROC
Thermal Drones for different clients
- Hobbyists and families: rarely bought privately, though some game farm owners use one to count animals
- Farmers and growers: finding lost stock, checking irrigation and spotting hot spots in stored crops
- Estate agents and developers: showing missing insulation and damp patches on large roofs before a sale
- Builders, engineers and installers: checking roof membranes and solar arrays on new buildings for faults
- Mines, plants and utilities: finding hot joints on switchgear, power lines, conveyors and solar farms
- Photographers, film crews and agencies: occasional wildlife and documentary work where heat images tell the story
- Security companies and estates: spotting warm bodies along farm and estate perimeters under approved operations
- Municipalities, schools and NGOs: search and rescue, firefighting support and anti-poaching work in reserves
