Agricultural drones in South Africa now do real work on farms: spray drones apply crop protection products on wet lands, steep slopes and tall crops where a tractor cannot go, spreading drones broadcast seed and granules, and smaller mapping drones show crop stress before it spreads. Buying one is a business decision that involves batteries, a generator, training and approvals, not only the drone. Send one request and agricultural drone suppliers and dealers that serve your area quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation.

Types of farm drone

  • Spray drones: large multirotors with tanks of roughly 10 to 70 litres, flow meters and nozzles or rotary atomisers. They follow a mapped route and hold a set height over the crop.
  • Spreading drones: the same frame with a hopper for seed, fertiliser granules or bait.
  • Mapping drones: camera or multispectral drones that build field maps and plant health indices to target scouting and spraying.

If you only need a few spray runs a season, hiring a contractor for drone crop spraying may make more sense than buying.

What a spray drone setup really needs

A spray drone flies only a short time per battery under load, so a working day needs several large batteries, a fast charger and usually a generator on a trailer. Add a mixing and water supply, a vehicle and a trained crew. Ask the supplier how many hectares a day the full setup realistically covers on your crop, and how the drone handles slopes, wind and dust. Clean the tank, pump and nozzles after every day of use, because dried residue blocks flow meters and wears pumps early. Look at battery life in charge cycles, because packs are a major running cost.

Approvals and safe use

Spraying for others is commercial flying: the pilot needs a Remote Pilot Licence, the company an operator certificate and the drone must be registered. Spraying also needs the right approvals and registered products, so ask the supplier or operator which approvals they hold for spraying. Drift, buffer zones near homes and water, and protective gear all matter. Many farmers buy the drone and send staff on an RPL course.

Price and comparing quotes

A spray drone costs about R91,500 to R203,000, excluding VAT. Compare tank size, the number of batteries and chargers included, a generator if offered, the mapping tool, warranty, the local service centre and how quickly spares such as arms, pumps and nozzles arrive in season. Ask for training and a first-day set-up on your farm in writing. Find out where the nearest service point is, whether a loan drone is available during a repair, and how firmware and route-planning updates are handled, because a drone that is grounded at the peak of the season costs far more than its repair bill.

What to include in your request

  • Your crops and the hectares you want to cover
  • Spraying, spreading, mapping or a mix
  • Whether you need a generator and charging setup
  • If your staff need RPL training
  • When you need the drone working on the farm

Agricultural Drones for different clients

  • Hobbyists and families: smallholders sharing one mapping drone to watch orchards and vegetable plots
  • Farmers and growers: spraying wet lands, slopes and tall crops where tractors and planes struggle
  • Estate agents and developers: mapping estates and wine farms to plan new blocks and irrigation
  • Builders, engineers and installers: rarely used, though mapping drones help plan farm roads and dams
  • Mines, plants and utilities: sugar mills and timber companies treating plantations and grower blocks
  • Photographers, film crews and agencies: seldom bought for media, though farm clips show the drone at work
  • Security companies and estates: not a security tool, though mapping flights show fence and boundary damage
  • Municipalities, schools and NGOs: agricultural colleges, research stations and farmer co-ops trialling drone spraying on trial plots

Frequently asked questions

How much does an agricultural spray drone cost?
A spray drone costs about R91,500 to R203,000 excluding VAT, depending mostly on tank size, flow rate and the bundle. Batteries, chargers, a generator, training and approvals add to the real cost, so ask suppliers to quote a complete working setup rather than the drone alone.
Is it better to buy a spray drone or hire a contractor?
It depends on how many hectares you spray and how often. Buying makes sense when you have regular work, staff to train and the time to manage approvals and maintenance. For a few runs a season, a licensed spraying contractor who brings their own drone, batteries and crew is usually simpler.
Can I fly a spray drone on my own farm without a licence?
Spray drones are heavy machines applying regulated products, and paid spraying is commercial work that needs an RPL, an operator certificate and the right approvals. Even on your own land, ask the supplier and an aviation advisor what applies to your setup before you fly, rather than assuming private rules cover it.
Who will quote me for an agricultural drone?
Independent agricultural drone dealers and suppliers that serve your region. You send one free request with your crops, hectares and what you want the drone to do. They quote you directly, and we never sell, fly or service drones ourselves, so you are free to choose.
