Commercial drones are built for work rather than holidays: survey drones with RTK positioning for accurate maps, enterprise multirotors that carry zoom, thermal or lidar payloads, and fixed-wing drones that cover large areas in one flight. They cost more, last longer and come with service plans, but they also bring licensing, registration and data handling with them. Tell us what you plan to fly and independent enterprise drone suppliers in your area quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation.

Which commercial drone fits the job

  • RTK survey multirotors: mapping drones with a centimetre-level positioning module for site surveys, volumes and progress maps.
  • Fixed-wing and VTOL drones: cover hundreds of hectares per flight for mines, farms and corridors, with vertical take-off where there is no runway.
  • Enterprise multirotors: weather-rated frames with swappable payloads such as zoom, thermal, lidar, spotlights or speakers.
  • Lidar payloads: laser scanners that see the ground under vegetation and model power lines and structures.

For heat work see thermal drones; for mapping as a service, see drone surveying.

Specifications that matter

Look at flight time with your payload fitted, wind and dust rating, transmission range in hilly or built-up areas, redundancy such as dual batteries and dual positioning, and how data is stored and transferred. Ask whether processing software is included or licensed per year, and whether the drone works with a base station or a correction network. Training on the payload is as important as training on the drone. Check that spare batteries, propellers and payload parts are kept in the country.

Licences, registration and the ROC

All paid flying needs a Remote Pilot Licence for each pilot, an RPAS Operator Certificate for the company and a registered drone; an air service licence may also be needed. At the time of writing, SACAA fees under the 2026 amendment are about R922 to register a drone and R8,089 for an operating certificate. Ask suppliers which paperwork they help with, and see drone licence for the pilot side.

How commercial drones are quoted

Commercial drones are quoted per configuration: the airframe, the payloads, batteries, base station, software and training. Ask for the full working kit in writing, the warranty, a service plan with a loan unit, local repair and calibration, and the lead time for spares. Compare total cost over the life of the drone, not just the first invoice: yearly software licences, battery replacement after a few hundred cycles, insurance and the cost of a day lost when the drone is in for repair. A supplier who trains your pilots and helps write procedures for the operations manual saves time later.

What to include in your request

  • The work you plan to fly and how often
  • Payloads needed: zoom, thermal, lidar or mapping
  • Accuracy needed and whether you have a base station
  • Whether your team already holds RPLs and an ROC
  • Software, training and service plan requirements

Commercial Drones for different clients

  • Hobbyists and families: rarely bought privately, though some surveyors start out as one-person firms
  • Farmers and growers: fixed-wing mapping of large farms, timber blocks and irrigation schemes
  • Estate agents and developers: accurate site maps and models for developers planning new estates
  • Builders, engineers and installers: RTK progress maps, earthworks volumes and as-built surveys on large sites
  • Mines, plants and utilities: stockpile volumes, pit surveys and lidar scans of power lines and plants
  • Photographers, film crews and agencies: heavier enterprise frames carrying larger cinema cameras and zoom lenses for specialised filming
  • Security companies and estates: weather-rated drones with zoom, thermal and spotlights for patrol teams
  • Municipalities, schools and NGOs: municipal mapping, disaster response and search teams with thermal payloads

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a commercial drone and a camera drone?
A commercial or enterprise drone is built for work: better weather rating, longer service life, payload options such as thermal or lidar, accurate RTK positioning and business support. A camera drone can be used commercially too, but the flying must still be under an RPL and ROC whichever drone you use.
Do I need RTK on a survey drone?
For maps that must line up with real coordinates to within a few centimetres, RTK or a similar correction method saves time, because you need fewer ground control points. For visual progress maps and rough volumes, a standard mapping drone with ground control can be enough. Ask your surveyor what accuracy the job needs.
How much does a commercial drone cost?
Commercial drones are quoted per configuration, so there is no single price. The airframe, payloads, number of batteries, base station, software licences and training all change the total. Ask suppliers for a complete, itemised quote for the work you plan, including warranty and service terms.
Can you put me in touch with enterprise drone suppliers?
Yes. Describe the work you plan to fly, the payloads you need and your region in one free request. Independent enterprise drone suppliers and resellers that serve your area quote you directly. We are a quote service only and do not sell, fly or service drones.
