Mini drones under 250 g fold to the size of a phone, slip into a day pack and still carry a proper gimbal camera. They suit hikers, travellers and anyone who wants aerial photos without lugging a case. Light does not mean unlimited, though: wind pushes them around, and South African rules still apply. A good mini drone balances camera quality, flight time and obstacle sensing for its weight. Send one request and drone shops and resellers that serve your area quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation.
What you get in a sub-250 g drone
Modern mini drones pack a lot into a small frame, but there are trade-offs to understand:
- Camera: the better models have a gimbal, a reasonable sensor and a camera that turns for vertical shots. Cheap toy drones without a gimbal give shaky video.
- Wind: a light drone drifts in gusts. On the coast or on a ridge, check the wind before you take off.
- Flight time: standard packs often give around 30 minutes; larger packs can push a drone over 250 g.
- Obstacle sensing: entry minis may only sense downward, so take care near trees.
The 250 g myth
Many buyers believe a drone under 250 g needs no rules. In South Africa that is not the case: SACAA guidance for private flying still applies. Keep it in sight, fly in daylight, stay below 150 ft (about 46 m), keep about 50 m from people, buildings and roads, and stay at least 10 km from airports. National parks and other restricted areas are still off limits. If you take paid photos with a mini drone, you need the same licence and operator certificate as with a larger one.
Batteries and the weight limit
Some mini drones offer a larger battery for longer flights. Fitted, it can take the drone over 250 g, which matters in countries that use that weight as a cut-off. Check which pack the shop is quoting and what it weighs. Two or three standard packs and a charging hub are usually a better buy than one big pack. Store packs at about half charge between trips, never charge a puffed pack, and carry batteries in hand luggage when you fly with an airline, checking the airline's limits first. See drone batteries for more care and storage tips.
Price and what to compare
A sub-250 g camera drone costs about R3,999 to R25,900. The difference comes from the sensor, obstacle sensing, the video link and whether the controller has its own screen. Compare quotes on the same bundle, the same warranty and the same battery type. Ask about propeller guards for first flights and a hard case to protect the gimbal in a pack. For bigger sensors and more stable footage in wind, see camera drones.
