Drones with camera are the most asked about drones in South Africa, and the choice is wider than ever: small folding drones for holidays, mid-size models with bigger sensors for property and events, and top consumer drones with several cameras on one gimbal. The right one depends on what you film, how far you travel with it and whether you will ever fly for pay. Tell us what you need and independent drone shops and resellers in your area quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation to buy.
What separates one camera drone from the next
Most folding camera drones look alike in a box. The differences that show in your footage and on the day are these:
- Sensor size: a larger sensor handles dawn, dusk and harsh midday contrast far better than a small one. For property and events it matters more than the resolution figure.
- Gimbal: a three-axis gimbal keeps video steady in wind. Check whether the camera can turn for vertical shots.
- Obstacle sensing: sensors on all sides help in trees and near buildings; forward-only sensing leaves the sides and rear blind.
- Transmission range and flight time: a strong video link and 30 to 45 minutes per battery give you time to frame a shot properly.

Weight, rules and where you may fly
Every drone falls under Part 101 of the Civil Aviation Regulations, run by the SACAA, whatever it weighs. SACAA guidance for private flying says keep the drone in sight, fly in daylight, stay below 150 ft (about 46 m), keep about 50 m from people, buildings and public roads, and stay at least 10 km from airports. National parks, prisons and power stations are off limits. The moment someone pays you for photos, you need a Remote Pilot Licence and an operator certificate, which is covered under drone licence.
What drives the price
Camera drones run from about R3,999 for an entry model to about R81,000 for a top consumer drone. Sensor size, the number of cameras, obstacle sensing and the video link account for most of that gap. A fly-more bundle with three batteries, a charging hub and a bag usually costs less than buying the extras later. Ask whether the controller has a built-in screen or needs your phone, and budget for spare batteries, ND filters and a hard case.
Warranty, repairs and comparing quotes
Ask each shop whether the drone is local stock with a South African warranty, who handles repairs and how long a gimbal or arm replacement takes. Optional crash cover from the maker is worth pricing, because a single fly-away or a tree can write off a gimbal. Compare the same bundle, the same warranty period and the same delivery terms, not just the headline price.
